The Dog Days of Summer, BrainShare News and more

August 11, 2011

The Dog Days of Summer
One benefit of a basement home-office is that it's relatively cool. Unusually hot weather in New Hampshire has made that essential this summer. While cooling my heels here in New England, I've been tracking a number of topics to share with you.

In previous notes I've been cautiously optimistic about the "new Novell" under Attachmate®. Now, a recent blog entry has me even more excited. Check out Tom Hafemann's July 12 entry "Novell is Dead!" I had a customer and a partner associate also attend the TTP conference and they echoed Tom's sentiments. Another interesting read is the recent blog entry "Defining the Next Chapter of Novell: Focus and Commitment" from Bob Flynn, the new President and General Manager for Novell. Lots of good words in regard to ZENworks® as well as other product lines. We're inside 90 days to BrainShare® 2011 and it will be very interesting to see what transpires there.

Coming right up: BrainShare 2011

Speaking of BrainShare 2011, the Novell Advanced Technical Training crew has invited me to present a pair of sessions in Salt Lake City. First up will be a new two-hour session on ZENworks Reporting Server, complete with hands-on labs. My second session will be four hours (again with hands-on labs) on ZENworks Asset Management, where I'll focus on analyzing usage data for ROI and building license entitlements for compliance. BrainShare runs October 10-14 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City.

One more note on training - the ZENworks Asset Management class scheduled in July was cancelled due to lack of registrants. But ATT plans to put the class on their schedule again in the Fall, so watch for announcements from Novell as well as my future ecards.

Auditing Penalties Provide Revenue Stream?

One item from the software publishing world has crossed my desk several times, up to and including a webinar: one of the main reasons that software publishers are auditing their customers is to generate revenue! This motivation was ascribed to 63% of software publishers "...as their number one reason..." for audits. Apparently the depressed economy means you have to get creative to make your numbers. Another nugget along the same lines - software vendors who engage an auditing firm to audit a customer suspected of being out of compliance may actually receive revenue from the audit itself. If the charged cost of the audit is $35 per seat, the software manufacturer may receive $10 from the auditor. Nice revenue stream!

Keep cool for the rest of the summer and I'll see you all in Salt Lake!
