Recovering from a Disaster: ZENworks Asset Management Can Help

September 6, 2011

Recovering from a Disaster

On the off-chance you missed the headlines, we had a little storm up here in New England recently. Irene started in the Caribbean, knocked a few islands around, and then took aim on the eastern seaboard of the United States. She did a pretty good job on Virginia - I think I heard around a million without power at one point - then started some major flooding in New Jersey. But closer to home, Irene really unloaded on Vermont. Flooding cut major highways and many lesser roads in one or more places, several century-old covered bridges were swept away, and many business were disrupted just on the eve of the fall foliage season, easily the most important period of the year for the tourist industry. All of this happened on the heels of a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Virginia, of all places. Two natural disasters in less than a week affecting the largest business regions of the country present an opportunity to discuss the essential need for disaster recovery preparedness. Regardless of what circumstances are thrown your way - hurricane, flood, tornado, earthquake, fire - every business needs to be prepared.

ZENworks Asset Management ® can provide you with the following:
  • Complete hardware inventory - your hardware assets represent a significant investment. A complete inventory will give you the information you need to negotiate with your insurance agency for replacement coverage.
  • Complete software inventory - your software may be as large a monetary asset as hardware, and you'll need to replace it to get back to work.
  • License management data - while your software might be as large an asset as hardware, it comes with a special liability: the licensing rights. Even after a disaster, it's up to you to prove that you own licenses for the software you reinstall. ZENworks Asset Management can store electronic backups of your proof-of-purchase data and associate them directly to software entitlements and to your software inventory. Remember though - hold on to the paper purchase records in safe storage, preferably off-site!
Remember - preparedness is the first step towards recovery. And check the weather forecast - hurricane season is only half over...

BrainShare 2011: October 10-14

Next month at BrainShare 2011, I will be presenting two sessions, starting with a new two-hour session on ZENworks Reporting Server, complete with hands-on labs. My second session will be four hours (again with hands-on labs) on ZENworks Asset Management, where I'll focus on analyzing usage data for ROI and building license entitlements for compliance. BrainShare runs October 10-14 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City.

Stay safe and I'll see you all in Salt Lake!
