Inventory Tips for Technology Partners:
ROP for Your Customers

September 14, 2010

As a provider of professional asset management services for a broad range of clients,    you know the benefits of a good inventory.

A regular software inventory keeps your clients' environments in compliance and their software costs on-budget. Finding and removing non-standard applications will save headaches in the short run and maintain network security in the long run.

Customers who already own ZENworks® Configuration Management may or may not be aware that the resident inventory module gives them the most complete and accurate inventory available on the market. Why is this important?
  • Audit Prevention: Inventory is the foundation that can fend off an audit before it even begins. Your customers may discover that ROP (Return on Prevention) is just as important as the ROI of their installation of ZENworks Configuration Management. Need a statistic? The BSA® just announced a settlement in August 2010 with AutoTrader.com, the leading automotive marketplace and consumer information website, headquartered in Atlanta. AutoTrader.com paid $400,000 to the BSA to settle claims that it had unlicensed copies of Adobe, Autodesk, Corel and Quest software installed on its computers.* The BSA will often move off a company that can produce an automated inventory report and not even begin the formal audit process.
  • Upgrade Management: A regular inventory will allow your customers to intelligently manage software and hardware upgrades. Microsoft® reports that Windows® 7 is on track to overtake XP installations by the end of the year. A ZENworks inventory can help you determine which machines are ready for the upgrade or need replacement before a Windows 7 migration.
  • Policy Management: Companies that have implemented an internal software policy should use inventory to keep their environments secure. By discovering non-standard applications, they can keep their environments running securely and efficiently.
  • Regular Product Updates: The ZENworks Configuration Management inventory is updated each month with new software versions. Without regular Product Recognition Updates (PRUs), your clients' inventory databases will quickly fall behind.
